Internship, Water Cluster
Background
SEI Asia, based in Bangkok, has a diverse team of multinational experts that integrates scientific
research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships,
and influence policy for resilient development. It focuses on gender and social equity, climate
adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources
management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.
SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have inked a long-
term agreement until 2023 to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective
policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia. The key areas of
collaboration are: intellectual engagement for joint research applications and fund
mobilization; lecturing and seminars for CU’s students; post–graduate supervision and
examination; and, CU-SEI employee linkages.
The role
This internship opportunity allows students or recent graduates to receive hands-on experience
with SEI-Asia’s multi-disciplinary water cluster. The intern will work majorly on the project the
Impact Based Alerting. The intern’s work will focus on the disaster portfolio in Nepal and how
different government agencies in Nepal are trying to reduce the risk. This opportunity will
provide the intern with on-the-job training as well as the ability to learn by doing. The internship
at SEI will enable the intern to further instil the ability to bridge science and policy.
Key duties and responsibilities include
Under supervision of the supervisors, the Intern will assist in the following:
• Literature review of peer-reviewed articles pertaining to disaster risk reduction
• Literature review of gray literature from relevant international organizations like World
Meteorological Organization, World Bank, IPCC and others
• Literature review of gray literature from government agencies of Nepal pertaining to the
risk of hydro-meteorological induced disasters and the official mechanisms to respond
against them
• Contact focal points in relevant government agencies like National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Department of Hydrology and
Meteorology (DHM), Department of Mines and Geology (DGM), and others
• Assist in preparation of questionnaire and seek appointment with focal points in relevant
agencies
• Support to organize interviews/workshops
• Support on preparation of draft report for the project
Deliverables
• Literature review and gap analysis report
• Identification of focal persons in relevant government and inter-governmental agencies
in Nepal
• Appointment for interviews/workshop
• Co-author the report and possibly a high-impact peer reviewed international journal
Who you are
We are looking for someone who is passionate, willing to learn and work with a diverse group
of researchers.
Formal qualifications and knowledge
• Possess or be completing a master’s degree in a relevant to disaster risk management,
policy planning, water resources engineering, hydrometeorology.
• Experience of field work and focus group discussions & interviews will be an advantage
• Prior experience of stakeholder mapping and literature review will be advantageous.
• Fluency in English and Nepalese, both written and spoken, is required for the position.
Additional Information
• SEI Asia provides a stipend allowance of THB 15, 000 per month
• The cost of the initial visa application and relocation as well as accommodation shall be
covered by the intern
• SEI Asia will support the process of obtaining the visa and work permit, if applicable
• The intern is responsible for their own health insurance for their stay in Thailand
