Intern (Migration Health – MHD)

Context

IOM works in the five broad areas of migration management: migration and development, facilitating migration, regulating migration, addressing forced migration, and the implications of climate change on

migration. Cross‐cutting activities include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants’ rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration.

The key responsibility of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) is to formulate regional strategies and plans of action and to provide programmatic and administrative support to the countries within its region. Several Regional Thematic Specialists (RTS) in the various areas of migration management are based at the ROAP to fulfill this responsibility.

The Regional Migration Health Unit is responsible and accountable for technical coordination on regional matters of Health Promotion and Assistance for Migrants (H2) and Migration Health Assistance for Crisis Affected Populations (H3) Programmes undertaken by IOM in the region covered by the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Thematic Specialist for Migration Health, the intern will work on the development, analysis and preparation of migration health information related to migrants, refugees, displaced individuals, returnees, other migrants and asylum seekers, support the secretariat functions of the Joint UN Initiative on Migration and Health in Asia (JUNIMA).

Core Functions/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Collect and systematically organize and analyze existing information from academic and governmental sources dealing with migration health to support the development of quality concept papers, presentations, and information sheets;
  1. Develop a database to track and describe existing national, regional and international recommendations and strategies related to the management of migration health issues in the populations concerned in Asia and the Pacific; and assist in developing general conclusions and action plans for further investigation, study and policy generation based on the conclusions;
  1. Assist in the editing of project concept papers and proposals, donor reports and other publications referred from the country missions to the Regional Migration Unit;
  2. Analyze and collate reports from the Project Information Unit, project managers and coordinators and focal points in Country Offices who are implementing migration health projects for status updates and relevant project documentation;
  1. Support regular updating and development of external communication materials including fact sheets, success stories and promotional materials;
  1. Support on updating website and social media content for JUNIMA, as well as other topics of interest for migrant health;
  1. Assist in the planning and organization of exhibitions, meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops when needed; and
  2. Undertake all other duties as may be assigned.

Training components and learning elements

  • Opportunities in attending IOM internal migrant health related trainings provided by Migration Health Unit and professional development e-training sessions provided by the Staff Development and Learning Unit
  • Learn about migration and health development projects to support migrants, refugees, displaced individuals, returnees, other migrants and asylum seekers in Asia and the Pacific Region
  • Get extensive knowledge on migration health and other migration issues through the meetings, workshops and conferences organized in Bangkok

Eligibility and Selection

The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 19 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. The Internship Programme is open to candidates of any nationality.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated; preferably completed undergraduate degree in medicine, nursing, public health or related social sciences fields and/or equivalent of;
  • Prior knowledge or experience working on migration or health issues;
  • Able to adapt to an international, multicultural, multilingual environment;
  • Good communication skills and able to work in a team;
  • Familiarity with computer programs, including MS Office programs and internet applications; knowledge on data analysis applications and mapping applications a plus;
  • Advanced English writing and communication skills

General Information

  1. Interns are granted a stipend of THB 12,018 per month as a partial contribution to accommodations and living expenses. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by his/her university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
  1. Before commencing work, successful candidates will be required to obtain a fit-to-work medical certificate from his/her doctor and submit vaccination records.
  1. The Intern will be responsible for obtaining the necessary entry visa and arranging their travel to Bangkok. IOM will assist only in issuing documents required for visa processing.
  1. IOM only covers the Intern against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. The Intern is responsible for his/her own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
  1. Any work produced by interns during their internship within the framework of the duties assigned to them should be used for academic purposes exclusively. All economic and moral rights (copyright) pertaining to such work will remain the exclusive property of IOM.
  1. Interns are bound by staff confidentiality rules pertaining to their duties in IOM.
